Description
The TB30B is Troy-Bilt’s gate-friendly riding mower, engineered for the homeowner whose property doesn’t justify a full-size lawn tractor but more than justifies giving up the walk-behind. With its 30-inch cutting deck and 18-inch turning radius, it slips through standard 36-inch garden gates, navigates tight landscaping without retracing passes, and parks compactly in a single-bay garage or mid-size shed.
At the heart of the machine sits a 10.5-horsepower Briggs & Stratton PowerBuilt OHV engine. The 344cc single-cylinder is positioned behind the operator — a layout choice that shortens overall length and shifts weight rearward for better traction on rolling terrain. Cold starts are handled by an automatic Choke-a-Matic system; there are no manual chokes, primer bulbs, or cold-start procedures to learn. A regulated 3-amp charging system keeps the 150-CCA battery topped off for reliable key-start operation season after season.
The Shift-on-the-Go six-speed transmission is the TB30B’s defining feature. Forget clutch coordination and pedal modulation — gear selection happens through a single dash-mounted lever you can move while in motion. Six forward speeds give precise control between trim work near beds and full-throttle passes across open lawn, with 4.25 mph at the top end and 2 mph in reverse for backing out of tight corners.
Cutting performance comes from a 14-gauge stamped steel deck running a single high-lift blade, adjustable across five height settings between 1.5 and 4 inches via hand lever. Side discharge is the default mode out of the box, but the included mulch plug converts the deck to mulching in under sixty seconds — an unusual inclusion at this price point, where mulch kits are typically a paid accessory.
Operator comfort centers on a sliding mid-back seat with knob adjustment, integral rubber floor mats that dampen engine vibration, and disc brakes for confident, modern stopping feel. A factory cup holder and uncluttered control layout signal Troy-Bilt’s intent: this is a tool, not a showpiece. The robotically welded steel frame, 14-gauge front pivot bar, and corrosion-protected chassis are built for several seasons of weekly residential use.
A 1.3-gallon fuel tank delivers roughly two hours of continuous mowing time. The standard rear hitch accepts most popular tow-behind attachments — dump carts, broadcast spreaders, plug aerators, dethatchers, and small lawn rollers all mount without modification. Bagger, mulching kit, snow plow blade, and lawn cart accessories are sold separately.
For the right property — a half-acre or smaller, flat to gently rolling, with at least one gate and a tight garage — the TB30B is one of the most pragmatic, lowest-maintenance entry points into the riding-mower category. It will not pretend to handle three acres of slopes or pull a heavy load up an embankment, and Troy-Bilt does not market it that way. What it does instead is take a category that has always felt either oversized or undersized for the typical suburban yard and quietly land it in the right place.
