Description
The IKON ONYX 52 is the Custom Edition trim level of Ariens’ residential 52-inch zero-turn — the same chassis, Kawasaki FR691V V-twin, and fabricated steel deck as the standard IKON 52, with an upgraded ZT-3100 commercial Hydro-Gear transmission, a premium suspension seat, oversized 20-inch rear tires, and a two-tone black-on-black paint scheme with orange accents that gives the machine a distinct visual presence on the property. For owners shopping for the IKON’s residential balance with a few commercial-tier upgrades, the ONYX is the right step up.
Power comes from a Kawasaki FR691V V-twin OHV engine displacing 726cc. The FR series is the residential-grade extension of Kawasaki’s commercial FX engine line, sharing the same overhead valve architecture, full pressure lubrication, and dual-element premium air filtration. Owners running the IKON ONYX 52 on a typical weekly residential schedule will see oil and filter changes once a season — essentially the entire engine maintenance routine. Electric key start, automatic choke, and a regulated charging system handle cold mornings without operator intervention.
Twin Hydro-Gear ZT-3100 commercial transaxles power the rear wheels independently, allowing true zero-radius pivoting controlled through a pair of lap bars. Top forward speed is 7 mph and reverse runs at 3.5 mph. The Hydro-Gear ZT-3100 is the commercial-tier transmission found on Ariens’ APEX series machines — significantly larger oil capacity, reinforced internals, and a longer service life than the EZT transmissions in the standard IKON.
The 52-inch fabricated steel deck cuts at 13 height settings between 1.5 and 4.5 inches via a foot-lift pedal and pin-locked indicator. Three cutting blades work in side-discharge configuration. The deck is finished in the ONYX black trim package and accepts an optional Ariens mulch kit (sold separately).
Operator comfort centers on a premium suspension seat with armrests — a noticeable upgrade over the standard IKON’s high-back seat — plus soft-grip lap bars, oversized 20-inch aggressive-tread rear tires for improved traction, and a vibration-dampening foot deck. The dashboard layout is honest and minimal: ignition, throttle, choke, PTO knob, hour meter.
The chassis is welded steel with a corrosion-resistant black powder-coat finish and orange accent decals throughout. The standard rear hitch accepts most popular tow-behind attachments — dump carts, broadcast spreaders, plug aerators, dethatchers, and lawn rollers all mount without modification. Cup holder and hour meter are factory standard.
For two- to four-acre properties where the homeowner wants commercial-tier transmissions, premium suspension seat comfort, and the looks to match, the IKON ONYX 52 is the most distinctive Ariens in the catalog. The ZT-3100 transmission and suspension seat are the substance behind the visual upgrade.
