Description

The Bronco 42 is Troy-Bilt’s bridge between an entry rear-engine rider and a full lawn tractor — a foot-pedal automatic with a 42-inch fabricated steel deck, sized for properties up to roughly an acre and a half. The Step-Thru frame and adjustable seat make getting on and off easy, and the foot-pedal AutoDrive transmission means there is nothing to learn beyond push-to-go, release-to-stop. For the homeowner stepping up from a walk-behind, it is the shortest learning curve in the riding-mower category.

Power comes from a 547cc Troy-Bilt single-cylinder OHV engine, factory-rated equivalent to a 19-class V-twin in this application class. The engine is electric-start with key ignition, fully pressurized lubrication, and an oil filter standard — unusual at this price point, where splash-lubrication is still common. A regulated 3.75-amp charging system keeps the 150-CCA battery healthy. Fuel capacity is 1.36 gallons and a Choke-a-Matic eliminates manual cold-start sequences.

The AutoDrive continuously variable transmission is the everyday usability story. There are no gears to shift, no clutch to ride, and no reverse handle to find. A single forward pedal varies ground speed from a creep to a 5.5 mph top end; lifting your foot returns the mower to neutral. Reverse runs at 2.5 mph through a separate pedal. The result is a riding experience closer to driving an automatic car than operating outdoor power equipment.

Cutting performance is delivered by a 42-inch, 13-gauge stamped steel deck running two blades in a side-discharge configuration. Two anti-scalp gauge wheels at the leading edge of the deck reduce turf damage on uneven ground, and the five-position fender-mounted height lever adjusts the cut between 1.5 and 3.75 inches without leaving the seat. A mulch kit is sold separately for owners who prefer to recycle clippings.

Daily comfort features include a mid-back seat with knob adjustment, rubber footpads to dampen vibration and add traction, and a tight 18-inch turning radius for navigating around trees and beds. Automatic headlights provide visibility in low-light conditions — helpful for early-morning or post-sunset cuts during the long-day months. The dashboard layout is deliberately minimal: ignition, choke, throttle, PTO lever, cup holder.

Beneath the body panels, a robotically welded steel frame and 14-gauge front pivot bar carry the load. The chassis carries corrosion protection, the rear axle is 3/4-inch steel, and the entire package is designed for several seasons of weekly residential mowing. A standard rear hitch accepts most popular tow-behind attachments — dump carts, broadcast spreaders, plug aerators, dethatchers, and lawn rollers all mount without modification. Bagger, mulching kit, and snow plow blade accessories are sold separately.

For a property between half an acre and an acre and a half — too much for a walk-behind, not enough for a $5,000 zero-turn — the Bronco 42 occupies the sweet spot. It is the modern American lawn tractor distilled down to its essentials: an automatic transmission, a 42-inch deck, headlights, and a bench-style seat. Nothing exotic, nothing missing.
