Description
The YTH1942 is Husqvarna’s entry into its 100 Series — a 42-inch hydrostatic lawn tractor sized for one- to two-acre suburban lots and built around the brand’s reputation for clean, even cuts. Where most competitors at this price point use a manual gear drive or a coarse CVT, the YTH1942 ships with a true pedal-controlled hydrostatic transmission. The result is the kind of smooth, infinitely variable speed control normally found on tractors costing several hundred dollars more.
Power comes from a 19-horsepower Briggs & Stratton EXi Series single-cylinder OHV engine, displacing 540 cubic centimeters. The EXi series is engineered specifically to eliminate routine engine oil changes — owners check and top off oil rather than draining it on a service interval. A regulated charging system, electric key start, and automatic choke round out an engine package designed for owners who would rather mow than maintain.
The pedal-operated hydrostatic transmission lets the operator change speed and direction without releasing the steering wheel. Two pedals, both controlled by the right foot — forward on top, reverse below — deliver a natural, car-like driving feel that flattens the learning curve for first-time tractor owners. Top forward speed runs around 5.5 mph, comfortably faster than the property is large enough to use, and reverse is metered for backing carefully out of garages and tight corners.
The 42-inch reinforced stamped steel deck cuts at six height settings between 1.5 and 4 inches via a fender-mounted lever. Husqvarna’s Air Induction technology pulls air down through the top of the deck and out the discharge chute, lifting grass blades for a cleaner cut and improving discharge dispersal. Two cutting blades work in tandem; both are bolted directly to maintenance-free, sealed-bearing spindles.
Operator comfort centers on a 15-inch high-back seat with a sliding adjustment, an ergonomic oversized soft-grip steering wheel, and a low-effort fender lever for the deck height — all designed to reduce fatigue across a two- to three-hour mowing session. A factory cup holder is standard. The dashboard is honest: ignition, throttle, choke, PTO knob, and a fuel gauge. No unnecessary buttons, no learning curve.
Underneath, the chassis is welded steel with corrosion-resistant paint, the front axle is heavy cast for shock loads, and the rear hitch is standard for tow-behind attachments. Dump carts, broadcast spreaders, plug aerators, dethatchers, and lawn rollers all mount without modification. A 38-inch turning radius is wider than a zero-turn but narrow for a steering-wheel tractor, and is one of the reasons the YTH1942 outsells most competitors in its size class.
For one to two acres of mostly flat to gently rolling lawn, the YTH1942 is the most pragmatic Husqvarna in the catalog. It will not match a $5,000 zero-turn for speed, and it will not match a commercial-grade tractor for slope work, but it does deliver Husqvarna engineering at a price that competes with house-brand alternatives — and that is the entire point.
