Description
The T2200K is Craftsman’s Turn Tight tractor for the homeowner who is tired of backing up around landscaping — a 42-inch hydrostatic lawn tractor with a 5-inch zero-turn-style turning radius and a 20-horsepower Kohler 7000 V-twin under the hood. Where most steering-wheel tractors at this size and price use a wide 16-to-18-inch turn radius and rely on the operator to compensate, the T2200K’s articulated front axle pivots aggressively, eliminating the awkward three-point turns that define mowing around mature trees and curved beds.
The Kohler 7000 Series V-twin displaces 747cc and delivers two cylinders’ worth of smooth, vibration-damped power. Owners coming from a single-cylinder tractor notice the difference within minutes: the engine hum is quieter, the deck loads more evenly, and the throttle response under load is significantly stronger. Full pressure lubrication, automotive-style oil filter, and electric key start round out a long-life engine package built for residential service intervals.
Power reaches the wheels through a foot-pedal-controlled hydrostatic transmission. There are no gears to shift, no clutch to ride, and no transmission belts to slip. A single forward pedal varies ground speed continuously from a creep to roughly 5.5 mph; lifting your foot returns the mower to neutral. Reverse runs through a separate pedal at 2.8 mph. The pedal layout is the most car-like in the riding-mower category and is one of the easier transmissions for first-time tractor owners to master.
The 42-inch stamped steel deck cuts at six height settings between 1.5 and 4 inches via a fender-mounted lever. Two cutting blades work in parallel; side discharge is the default mode out of the box, and the deck accepts an optional Craftsman bagger or mulch kit (sold separately). Anti-scalp wheels at the deck’s leading edge prevent gouging on uneven ground.
Turn Tight steering is the T2200K’s defining feature. The articulated front axle and tightened steering geometry pivot the tractor through a 5-inch radius — effectively a single-pass turn around most landscape obstacles. Owners who have grown accustomed to backing up around shrubs, mailboxes, and play sets will recover roughly 15 to 20 percent of their total mowing time on a property with mature landscaping. The handling difference is most obvious in the first half-hour.
Operator comfort centers on a sliding high-back seat with armrests, a soft-touch steering wheel, headlights for low-light mowing, and an integrated cup holder. The chassis is welded steel with a corrosion-resistant finish, and the standard rear hitch accepts most popular tow-behind attachments — dump carts, broadcast spreaders, plug aerators, and dethatchers all mount without modification.
For a one- to two-acre property with mature trees, curved beds, or a heavily landscaped layout, the T2200K Turn Tight is one of the few 42-inch tractors that delivers genuine zero-turn-class agility from a steering-wheel format. The combination of a Kohler twin and Turn Tight steering is the value proposition.
